Meru Boys

I forgot to mention this during my rural home stay posts. My friend, Boss, lived behind my house in a little house by himself. He was finishing secondary school. He explained to me that after primary school, the men are circumcised (14 yrs old usually) and then move out of their home. They take meals separate from the rest of the family and live a very independent lifestyle. This is extremely common among the Meru people. It is a part of the traditional lifestyle that has continued.

Reflection: I found that this was a very respectable idea. Boss and other boys his age were very responsible and independent when applying for university and doing work in the shamba. This idea of at fourteen years old having independent teenagers sounds amazing when I have children.. but it would have to go for girls too... haha.
